"The women were shocked to see that people in the community cared enough to put such wonderful things together for them." - Program Coordinator, Street Haven Shelter, Toronto
What is the Shoebox Project?
We collect and distribute gifts in the form of shoeboxes to women in shelters in Toronto. Each shoebox is filled with items valued at $60 that a woman would enjoy but would not splurge on for herself in difficult times. These shoeboxes brighten the holiday season and let the women know they are special and not forgotten. Putting together a shoebox is easy and this small gesture of kindness is very much appreciated by its recipient.
Inspired by the great idea of a family member, we started the Shoebox Project in 2011. Our goal was to collect 156 shoeboxes - enough to give each woman at the Red Door Family Shelter a holiday gift. The donations we received surpassed our expectations and the Shoebox Project was able to provide gifts to women at other shelters in Toronto. We collected 390 shoeboxes and delivered them to the women of the Red Door Shelter, Nellie's Women's Shelter, Nazareth House and Street Haven at the Crossroads. Donations included shoeboxes filled with many wonderful gifts as well as Christmas cakes from Husky Foods, movie passes from Cineplex, makeup from Sephora and Revlon and scarves and pashminas.
Our goal for 2012 is to collect more shoeboxes, to reach out to more shelters and to let you know about other ways to make a difference at a shelter - any time of the year.
Please help spread the word about the Shoebox Project! If you would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you!
